Abstract Starting in the spring of 1915, during World War I, some women in unoccupied France volunteered for the role of "war godmothers," marraines de guerre. To provide the moral support these men, so-called "war orphans," could not receive from their families, women in unoccupied areas became their pen pals. Elisabeth Gilman was born in New Haven, Connecticut, December 25, 1867. She was the younger daughter of Daniel Coit and Mary (Ketcham) Gilman. Her father was a college professor and the first president of The Johns Hopkins University. Horace Porter (1837-1921) was an American soldier and diplomat who served as an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War, personal secretary to General and President Ulysses S. Grant and to General William T. Sherman, vice president of the Pullman Palace Car Company and U.S. Ambassador to France from 1897 to 1905. The collection consists of four typescripts presumably written by Porter, but dating from approximately 1923.

Samson Feldman (circa 1901-1983) began submitting political cartoons to The Baltimore Sun after graduating from Baltimore City College. This collection contains 33 printed cartoons that were published in The Evening Sun editions of The Baltimore Sun from 1917 to 1918.
